The Synopsis
Mawata's despair feeds the Great Tree of Fenrir. Fenrir laughs and informs the Awayukis that there is nothing they can do about this - that she was already lost to them from the beginning. Himeno denies it and hurries over to where Mawata is cocooned, and begins to tear at the branches that try to keep her away. The rest of the Awayukis follow, also wanting to help to get Mawata back. Suddenly, swarms of demon larvae surround them, but are stopped by a reasuring Go and Kei, who had just finished sending off the younger Leafe knights to help the people evacuate. Himeno warns that the Awayukis that they could get hurt, but Mayune shouts her down by telling her that Mawata is HER little sister. The four of them work together to tear at the ever-increasing number of branches that stand between them and the prone Mawata.
Fenrir and Sasame watch from the top of the Great Tree. Fenrir asks Sasame when he thinks they will finally give up, and laughs at the fruitlessness of their efforts. Sasame seems to look on sadly. When Fenrir realizes that the Awayukis aren't going to give up, she starts to send her power down to stop them when Sasame tells her he will take care of it for her. He flies down to the Awayukis and draws his sword, which is blocked by Himeno's hurried blast of Wind shield. Himeno tells Sasame that she is his opponent, and to leave her family out of it. She assures her family that she will be okay, and tells them to take care of Mawata while she is away.
Sasame and Himeno meet higher in the Great Tree. Sasame asks Himeno if she hates him, and she replies that yes she does, especially after what he did to Mawata. Sasame explains that he has freed Mawata by allowing her the luxury of hatred. He tells Himeno that he had denied his own love for Takako, and as a knight, had helped to seal his love away. This hurt his heart, and no matter how many other hearts he soothed in the future, his own was never healed. Sasame has come to the conclusion that it would have been easier had he been able to hate Hayate for this. He tells Himeno that she does not understand this kind of pain, the pain which he, Takako, and Mawata all share. Himeno tells him that he's wrong, and that hatred is not what Mawata wants. At that moment, Sasame attacks her with his sword. Himeno manages to block clumsily, but is unable to shield herself when Sasame throws a blast of sound in her direction. Hayate blocks it for her and takes the hit.
Sasame tells Hayate that he should undo the pretear and fight him alone if he doesn't want Himeno to get hurt. Himeno protests, and warns Hayate that if they undo it there will be no way to defeat Sasame. Sasame agrees to that, but also adds that if they do fail to defeat him, Himeno will die. At this, Hayate undos the pretear, and reassures Himeno that he will be back because he has something to tell her later.
Himeno begins to climb the Great Tree as the two leave to fight in another area. She makes it to the top, where Fenrir mocks her for having the gall to come up to her in human form. Himeno asks Fenrir to stop this, and tells her that though no one will get hurt if they're all dead, no one can trust each other either. Through the mirror in the rock, the image of Mawata appears. Himeno launches herself at it, shouting Mawata's name. Bolts of power shoot at Himeno as she attempts to reach Mawata, but she eventually gets to the rock and Mawata sees her through the barrier. Himeno gets Mawata to finally notice Natsue, Mayune, and Kaoru all calling for her to come back. She asks Mawata what she wants, and Mawata tells her that all she wants is a warm hand. At this, Mawata begins to come out of the shell of despair, and is embraced by her family.
With the loss of its main source of power, the Great Tree begins to disintegrate.
When Fenrir sees Mawata smiling as she is received by her family again, she becomes very upset. Fenrir cries that no matter how hard you try, you can't be loved, and suddenly remembers Sasame and calls for him. Sasame arrives with Hayate in tow. He drops Hayate's exhausted and defeated body to the floor and rushes over to comfort Fenrir as Himeno rushes over to Hayate. Fenrir tells Sasame to kill Hayate and Himeno if he really loves her. As Sasame advances toward the pair, Himeno, almost in a hollow voice, tells Sasame that this isn't what he needs to do right now if he wants to save Fenrir. She tells him that she was very afraid when she learned that she, too, might turn into a Princess of Disaster, and that Takako must have felt the same way - Takako still doesn't want to be a Princess of Disaster. Sasame hesitates at these words. Fenrir realizes that Sasame is having second thoughts, and says "...so it's you too..." to Sasame, and begins to draw in more leafe to herself. The Great Tree, already bereft of its main power, becomes angry when Fenrir begins to take more Leafe, and its branches shoot out to destroy her. Sasame sees this and manages to block the Tree's attack with his own body. His last words to a shocked Fenrir are "...I am a Knight only for you."
The Review
Talk about drama! We begin to see that Fenrir does still have a heart, and that her actions were based upon the pain of rejection she felt after Hayate refused her. Sad that Sasame becomes victim to this - at this point, it looks like he isn't going to make it.
