Nausicaa

Saturday, March 24, 2007
I love Miyazaki's films - they always seem to have a life of their own. I watched Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind in Japanese - there was no subbed or dubbed version in the set I had - and even though I couldn't understand all the stuff they were saying, the animated images just told the story by itself.
So here's a before-and-after on the Nausicaa wall I did almost a year ago (dang - time passes by fast!).

Before

The original scan was 1003x1334 px at 72 dpi.
Click on the image to view a larger version.

After

The girl is based on the scan, and most of the frontal scenery which had some photoshop edits to it. The mountains and background were a mix of stock photos and photoshop magic; the windmills I drew myself and added them on (what better to represent a "valley of wind" but windmills?).

This wall was actually the first one I worked on after I bought my beloved mac. I started out CG-ing it in Illustrator...but eventually admitted defeat and went back to the more familiar Photoshop.

I love the art to those anime as well. XD But wow, your wallpaper makes it even more amazing X_X

I need to get a mac computer someday... haha yeah... -_- that will be a long wait cause I'm poor poor poor xD

It's funny going to school for computer related stuff because you get to meet the people who hate pc's with a passion. Sometimes I know people more by how much they like mac over their actual name. xD

Wow, that was really random. heh

You're a vegan, too? Whoa! I only turned about a year ago. We should totally stop being lazy and get better jobs, and then give money to the ALF to make up for it, lol. Vegan terrorist, what?

Wow that's a really really beautiful edit! Your wallpapers are so pretty! I'm going to go through them and pick out one for my desktop. Hooray for having them in my resolution too (1280x1024, so many people just have an 1280x960 option).

People always seem to like Miyazaki films, but I'm very picky with them. I like some, but then simply detest others. I liked the dubbed Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away, but came to hate Princess Mononoke and came to dislike Howl's Moving Castle. I think it's due to the fact that I dislike an extreme amount of gore and creepiness in cartoons. Unfortunately, Miyazaki films usually contain both...heh.

O_O! Simply freakin' amazing! Illustrator is incredibly confusing for me- I don't even *try*. I like the rocks and the grass...special respect to you for the rocks simply because I can't even make rocks look like rocks when I draw them on paper. xD

Miyazaki *is* amazing. I love Spirited Away and all those other films. /sigh/ Now I want to go watch them.

Aaww, I've always wanted a mac, I hate you for making me envious. xP

Anyhow, what you did to the original picture was amazing! 8D Photoshop is quite lovely isn't it?

I'm also a fan of Miyazaki's films. *o* I've seen part of Nausicaa, but never got to finish it. I guess I've kind of lost interest, when my younger siblings plays it, over and over and over again. D: It got old, I guess. ._.;;

Aiye, I like your windmills. :) I think they fit perfectly in the landscape; and with the title "valley of wind," it would all make sense then why little windmills are present. XD~ (it's possible to have windmills especially since the valley does have a lot of wind in it... so yea!)

Your art never ceases to amaze me!! XD~

This is one of maybe 3 walls i´ve used from your site. As for illustrator, I´ve heard it´s more powerful if you are drawing because of the focused toolset and many keyboard shortcuts for the pen tool, because of the gradient mesh, which I don´t think you can replicate in Photoshop, and because its easier to resize items later, in case you want to make the drawing poster-sized

Woah o___O The before and after is... :O I love it when you show a before and after. Really shows the effort you put in when creating images like that.

Hmm, yet another masterpiece. I'm a fan of Miyazaki movies so I was really happy to see this piece. Nausicaa was a really good movie

I've never heard of Nausicca before. I should look into it seeing lotsof people say Miyazaki's movies are good.

The wallpaper is really beautiful. The windmill looks real.

I actually haven't seen Nausicaa yet now that I think about it. I've read it though (does that count?) To think this was made nearly a year ago. I love Miyazaki movies though with a love for Totoro and many others. Didn't know you had a mac. It's it actually easier to CG on illustrator? I have illustrator lying around my computer but I never bothered installing in feas of blowing up my computer (I'm still using a desktop PC)

I didn't know there was manga on Nausicaa xp I guess it does count.
Actually, I have no clue about Illustrator =/. I've always used photoshop for CGing ~ though I've been making a few half-hearted attempts at trying Illustrator since that's the official "drawing" program. Photoshop's original purpose is manipulation.

Wow, that's beautiful. You have a mac too? What kind? I switched back to macs last July - the PowerPC phase sent me screaming and crying to Dell.

Miyazaki's movies are awesome. Nausicaa was beautiful, although I think the most beautiful would still be Mononoke for me.

I have an iMac.
